DESCRIPTION

The 1983 Yamaha RD125LC was a lightweight, liquid-cooled two-stroke sports motorcycle that became hugely popular with young riders in the UK during the early 1980s. Powered by a 123cc single-cylinder engine and a six-speed gearbox, it was known for its sharp handling, lively performance and distinctive powerband

The RD125LC was kick-start only, adding to its simple and engaging character. First introduced in 1982 as part of Yamaha's LC (Liquid Cooled) range, the model remained in production until 1986, before being replaced by newer Yamaha 125cc sports bikes

Today the RD125LC is regarded as one of the most iconic learner-legal motorcycles of its era

EXTERNAL

This 1983 Yamaha RD125LC is instantly recognisable thanks to its classic Yamaha racing-inspired colour scheme. Finished in Yamaha white with striking blue graphics the paintwork gives the bike the distinctive look that made the LC range so popular during the 1980s

The body panels remain straight and present very well with the decals retaining their sharp appearance and complementing the bike’s sporty lines perfectly.

The double black seat is in excellent condition free from tears, splits or excessive wear, while the fairing and screen are equally impressive, showing none of the cracking or stress marks often found on machines of this age. The fuel tank displays a deep, glossy finish and the frame has retained its authentic appearance, giving the bike an honest and original look throughout.

All switches, lights and controls operate as intended, reflecting the care the machine has received over the years. As one of the most iconic lightweight two-strokes of its generation, the RD125LC remains a sought-after example of Yamaha’s golden era of liquid-cooled performance motorcycles

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Built to comply with the UK 12A learner regulations of the period, the RD125LC’s liquid-cooled 123cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine produces around 12.2bhp at 7,500rpm, with peak torque of 8.68 lb-ft arriving at 7,000rpm. Lightweight and eager to rev, it provides spirited performance for a learner-legal machine

The engine retains its strong character, with the major components presenting cleanly and in keeping with the bike’s age. Power is delivered through Yamaha’s close-ratio six-speed gearbox, operated via a remote linkage that provides a light, positive shift and helps make full use of the engine’s lively power

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 1983 Yamaha RD125LC is fitted with the distinctive cast-alloy wheels that became a hallmark of the LC range, sharing the same sporty design language as its larger RD250LC and RD350LC siblings. Finished in black with machined alloy accents, the wheels complement the bike’s period styling and remain in very good condition, with a clean and well-cared-for appearance.

Tyres front and rear are as new showing minimal signs of use and offering excellent grip. Their fresh tread and overall condition provide reassurance for both everyday riding and display purposes.

Braking is handled by a hydraulic disc brake at the front and a drum brake at the rear, a proven setup that delivers predictable stopping power as required

The combination suits the lightweight nature of the RD125LC well, providing balanced and confidence-inspiring braking performance in a variety of riding conditions

HISTORY FILE

First registered on 1st January 1983, this Yamaha RD125LC represents a model that helped define an entire generation of motorcycling enthusiasts. Arriving at a time when Yamaha’s liquid-cooled two-stroke technology was setting new standards in the lightweight class, the RD125LC offered young riders a genuine taste of the performance and styling found in its larger RD siblings. More than four decades later, surviving examples in well-preserved condition are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

The RD125LC occupies a unique place in Yamaha history. It was the machine that introduced countless riders to the LC legend, combining sharp handling, lightweight agility and unmistakable two-stroke character in a learner-legal package. As stricter emissions regulations brought the two-stroke era to a close, motorcycles such as this became part of a chapter of motorcycling that can never be repeated.

Presented with its iconic period styling intact and retaining the features that made the model so desirable when new, this example stands as a reminder of a golden age of Japanese motorcycle engineering. Its appeal extends beyond simple nostalgia; it represents an increasingly collectible machine from a period that enthusiasts and collectors continue to celebrate.

Whether destined for display within a serious collection, regular attendance at classic motorcycle events, or careful enjoyment on the road, this RD125LC deserves to be preserved for future generations. Opportunities to acquire honest, well-presented examples of these early liquid-cooled Yamaha two-strokes are becoming increasingly rare, and demand continues to grow as collectors seek out the machines that shaped the 1980s motorcycling scene.

For many, the RD125LC was the bike they wanted, the bike they owned, or the bike they wish they had never sold. Today it remains one of the most recognisable and important lightweight two-strokes ever produced by Yamaha a true collector's machine and a worthy addition to any classic motorcycle collection.
